This pattern of restriction mitts was widely used in Victorian mental asylums and prisons.

It was found that this design enabled warders to leave patients encased in these leather restriction mitts for long periods as the unfortunate victim did not suffer from loss of circulation to the hands,a small amount of finger flexing is possible, but it is virtually impossible to pick things up or masturbate.
